What to Expect

Knee model to demonstrate relevant anatomy

Your First Visit

Dr. MacLean starts with obtaining X-Rays of the joint or body part that you are concerned about. This helps screen for common problems that cause pain. If you have already had imaging performed, please bring it with you on a CD for Dr. MacLean to review. Dr. MacLean will then take time to discuss your condition with you and perform an examination. He will discuss your imaging and formulate a plan with you based on your story, exam, and imaging to help alleviate your pain. You will be offered a follow up appointment to ensure you are improving as expected.

Treatment

Most conditions do not require surgery. Commonly, treatment plans include a mix of modifying activity to allow your body to heal, Physical Therapy, medications (ie. NSAIDs, tylenol), injections (ie. cortisone, PRP), and time. Occasionally, some conditions will require surgery if there is a tear or if non-operative treatments do not work. Dr. MacLean believes that treatment is not "one size fits all." He develops a treatment plan with you that is tailored to your diagnosis and goals.

What if Surgery is Needed?

If surgery is needed, Dr. MacLean will thoroughly discuss the risks, benefits, and any alternatives to treatment. He will review the recovery timeline including any restrictions that may be in place (ie. needing crutches, no driving) as well as when you can expect to return to specific activities and sports. Dr. MacLean also emphasizes the importance of physical therapy after surgery. Proper rehabilitation is critical to achieving a good outcome. The patient-surgeon relationship is built on trust, and Dr. MacLean values the trust his patients place in his care.
